CUBBY: Take a Peek Inside Sara Tan’s Revamped Kids’ Bedroom

"I’m 29 Years Old, and I’m Jealous of This Child’s Squiggle Bunk Bed"

"When I saw the revamped kids’ bedroom in Sara Tan’s home, my younger self felt jealous immediately. Don’t get me wrong — I loved my childhood room. My mom hired an artist to paint a woodland-themed mural around the bottom half of my walls. It felt like the animals and plants were my friends — almost as if they were growing up with me. But once I saw how the co-host of the Gloss Angeles podcast turned her daughter’s room into a whimsical space, I was blown away.

When Sara’s daughter Zoe turned 5, she wanted the room to reflect her daughter’s current interests, like painting, drawing, and crafting. “I wanted to create a space that felt a little more ‘big girl’ for her age right now, with arts and crafts at the center, but also something she’ll still love in a few years as she grows,” Sara explained.

Zoe’s room has nods to classic kid activities, like an entire storage section dedicated to her art supplies, and is decorated with glimpses of her favorite things — the ocean, the color pink, and photos of her friends and family — but it still feels very mature. That’s in large part because of the Babyletto furniture, which the company gifted to Sara, in the room. The star of the show? The squiggly-shaped elevated bed (which can be converted into a bunk bed).

The Lido Wave Convertible Bunk Bed by Babyletto is arguably one of the coolest sleeping areas I’ve ever seen. It comes in two arrangements (both twin-size): an option with two beds (one lofted and one on the ground), and a lofted bed that has free space underneath. The second option, which is the one Zoe has in her room, is ideal for smaller bedrooms because it occupies less available floor space.

Zoe approved all of the furniture in her new bedroom, and apparently feels like a princess while sleeping in her elevated bed. She also picked out the floral Ruggable rug. “I wanted it to feel cozy and warm but still chic, and easy to keep organized so she can actually put things away herself,” Sara said. “Most of all, I wanted it to encourage independent play and be a space she could happily spend hours in.”

You can usually find Zoe at her Babyletto Nessa nesting play table, where all of her art supplies are readily available.

Even though Zoe might one day outgrow the nesting table, there are pieces in the room that can stick around for much longer. For example, as she gets older, the nesting table underneath the bunk can be swapped out for a full-size desk and she can still utilize that space. Zoe also has the complementary Lido Wave six-drawer dresser in her room that will continue to be stylish and functional for years to come.

Sara kept some of the design decisions secret so that Zoe could be surprised, and it turned out to be a win. Zoe loves spending time in her room, but other family members appreciate the space, too.

“It’s honestly my dream childhood bedroom,” Sara shared. “I think it might be my favorite room in the whole house. It makes me so happy that she loves it just as much as I do — maybe even more! — and wants to spend all her time in there. I can’t wait to see how she grows with it.”
